Swimming spots, or rather, the most beautiful swimming spots, are often a well-kept secret. But we'd like to share some of Ardèche's secrets with you and invite you to discover wonderful swimming spots, in rivers each more beautiful and mysterious than the last.
Swimming in Ardèche, yes… but not just any old way
Snake in the water: no danger
No! Vipers don't like water! This is a misconception, a persistent belief that you'll finally be able to disprove after reading this. The reptile most often seen in lakes or rivers is the viperine snake. A completely harmless gray snake that's very useful in the ecosystem. This friendly snake has the unfortunate idea of having a triangular head, which leads it to be confused with its cousin, the asp viper.
Regardless, snakes are useful and protected. Killing them, including vipers, is strictly forbidden.

Swimming in the Volane
In Laviolle, a reservoir creates a small body of water, ideal for swimming for little ones. Older children can swim in the clear pools among the rocks. Large expanses of grass and pleasant shade ensure an ideal picnic. You'll find tables and swings there. Access to the parking lot, after crossing the bridge, is located outside the hairpin bend on the left. Swimming is unsupervised.
Swimming in the Mas stream in Antraigues
Here too, you'll find a reservoir creating a pleasant little body of water just a stone's throw from the famous, characterful village of Antraigues. A large expanse of grass will welcome your daydreams, your eyes lost in a splendid basalt organ, an unalterable witness to geological time. After crossing the village (one-way crossing in summer), take the small road on your right that descends towards the tennis courts. Look out on your left: you'll see the parking area and the sports field. It's here. Swimming is not supervised, but the water quality is checked regularly in summer.
Swimming spots in the Besorgues
A small, intimate and bucolic swimming spot for nature lovers. Less accessible for families, those seeking peace and quiet will find large, flat rocks where they can lay down their towel and book for a relaxing moment. As you leave Vals (towards Antraigues), the "Vallée de la Besorgues" is signposted on your left after a speed bump. Take this charming (and winding) road that runs alongside the river for several kilometers. On the right of the roadway, several trails will take you to the edge of the clear, fresh waters of the Besorgues.

Swimming at Devil's Bridge
In Thueyts, the Devil's Bridge is a must-see if you're exploring the Ardèche. Imagine: a stone arch set in the heart of a volcanic landscape, with a river inviting you to swim. You can park just 100 meters away in the designated parking lot. But if you prefer to walk a little, leave your car in the village and take the path that descends under the road bridge. It runs alongside a spectacular basalt flow all the way to the river. It's beautiful, it's raw, it's unforgettable.
The Turbine, in Jaujac
Ah, the Turbine… What a rather crude name for a place that isn't at all. Just below the village of Jaujac, a stone's throw from the stone houses and shaded terraces, you come across a stretch of river that looks like it was sculpted by a mad architect. Black rocks, clear water, Olympian calm. No deckchairs, no vanilla ice cream, just the song of the Lignon and the echo of discreet swims. You lay your towel on a warm pebble, dive in without thinking, and come out with the impression of having washed away all your stress. It's simple: here, we don't need a spa. Just a little sun and a patch of shade between two basalt columns.
La Souche, swimming and leisure
Near the village, several swimming holes await swimmers. In summer, a reservoir creates a shaded pool, perfect for cooling off. A municipal pétanque court and tennis court are nearby, providing a variety of activities.

Vogüé, swimming in the Ardèche
When we talk about swimming, it's hard not to think of the Ardèche River. More than just a playground for canoers or hikers, it's a true swimmer's paradise. In Vogüé, the river runs through the village, offering wide, accessible banks that are perfect for families. You can combine exploring one of the most beautiful, characterful villages with a refreshing dip—what more could you ask for?
Balazuc, between a village of character and swimming
Balazuc is pure charm: a village listed as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages of France," with typical alleyways and an ideal spot for a swim. After your stroll through the winding alleys, the main street will lead you to the Balazuc Bridge. There, you'll find four beaches, ranging from sand to rocks, spanning about 500 meters, providing plenty of variety.
Ruoms, freshness and games by the river
Just a stone's throw from the bustling center of Ruoms, the riverbanks offer a refreshing, shaded break. Little ones will be in heaven, with a specially designed playground perfect for swimming and having a laugh.
The Pont d'Arc, the star of Ardèche swimming
It's impossible not to mention the legendary Pont d'Arc. The sandy beach stretches just beneath this natural arch. Yes, it gets crowded in the summer with canoes, but swimming here remains an incredible experience in a unique natural setting.
The Beaume and the Chassezac
The Little Rock in Joyeuse
Just outside the town center of the Duchy of Joyeuse, a reservoir creates a perfect spot for swimming. Follow the road to the left on the Place du Grand Font, cross a small bridge, then turn right at the second path: the beach is 100 meters away. Parking is available on site.
The village beach in Labeaume
This charming village welcomes you into an enchanting setting. Between the charming square, the shaded terraces, and the majestic cliff, swimming at its feet is simply a moment suspended in time.
Chaulet Beach
Wide river arms perfect for summer. Parking, drinks, and food nearby.
The Nassier Bridge
Near the hamlet of Salelles, above Les Vans, enjoy a sunny swim in a wild setting. Around the submersible bridge, several beaches alternate between shade and sun. From Les Vans, head towards Chambonas.
Swimming in the Ibie, the well-kept secret
The Ibie is a secret only shared among friends... Even though it's often dry, this wonderful little river between Villeneuve-de-Berg and Lagorce offers some beautiful swimming spots. Following the river by road, you'll find spots where the water is translucent. It's fragile, so be extra respectful of the environment in this precious valley.
Swimming in the lakes of Ardèche
Issarles Lake
At Lake Issarlès, you can swim in the pure, clear water, but also go pedal boating, canoeing, or windsurfing. If you feel like going for a walk, take a tour of the lake in the shade of the undergrowth. The place is peaceful, perfect for taking your time.
Lake Saint-Martial
