Imagine a clear river flowing between rocks, natural pools worthy of a wild spa, golden light playing in the foliage, and you, at the heart of it all, carried by the current and laughter. Welcome to the world of canyoning in Ardèche!
Slides, jumps (if you like), abseiling, and swimming... Every step in the water is an invitation to play, to gently push your limits, and to savor a moment outside of time. Canyoning is a joyful and refreshing adventure to experience with a group, with friends, or even solo with a passionate instructor.
You don't need to be a great athlete or a confirmed daredevil to give it a try. All you need is a love of water, breathtaking scenery, and good times to share. Ready to take the plunge?
Canyoning in Ardèche: instructions for use
Professional supervision for a confident adventure
Are you still hesitant to put on a wetsuit and dive into the arms of an Ardèche river? That's normal. Canyoning is one small step for man, one big dive for adrenaline... But don't worry, here, we won't let you jump into the unknown!

You'll be accompanied by qualified , passionate, and experienced instructors who know every pool, every waterfall, every small drop like the back of their hand. They'll adapt to your pace and desires. And most importantly: no jumps are mandatory on most of the routes. If the idea of descending a waterfall makes you shudder (but not from the cold), they'll always have an alternative to help you push your limits… gently.
The right canyon is the one that suits you.
You don't need to be a superhero to try canyoning, but you do need to be in decent shape 💪. We're not sending you to Mont Blanc, but it's best to know what to expect! Here's a short guide to help you choose the right canyon for you :
| Level | Hiking equivalent | Who is the game for? |
|---|---|---|
| Very easy | 3 hours of leisurely stroll | Beginners, families |
| Easy | 4 hours of gentle hiking | Occasional assets |
| Medium | 6 hours of good hiking | Sunday sportsmen |
| Difficult | 9 a.m. with singing calves | Seasoned adventurers |
| Very difficult | Climbing Everest solo in winter (ok, we're exaggerating a bit) | For the very well-prepared vacuum enthusiasts |
And don't forget: being comfortable in the water is the real foundation. After that, all you need is a bit of fitness, a good wetsuit (provided), and a good dose of curiosity.
Frequently asked questions about canyoning in Ardèche?
The ideal weather for canyoning?
In practice, canyoning is ideal in all weather (or almost), but it depends mainly on you! If you're a little sensitive to the cold, remember that canyons are often deep and the water is sometimes more than cool! Even if the wetsuit you'll be provided protects you, a nice warm ray of sunshine can be a plus.
Obviously, if the weather is stormy or rainy, the outing may be cancelled (don't worry: if the instructor considers that the conditions are not suitable, he will reimburse you).
How long does a canyoning trip last?
From one or two hours to a full day: the choice is yours. Before you choose, keep in mind that the activity is quite physical and requires a minimum level of endurance. To get the most out of it, choose an outing at your own pace!
What is the "approach march"?
You'll see this term very often in activity descriptions. Let us explain: To reach the trailhead, there's sometimes a short hike to plan. The time and elevation gain of the approach hike can affect the difficulty level of the activity and the required fitness level. On some trails, there will even be steps between two river sections. In a wetsuit, it can become quite an adventure! But immersing yourself in the wilderness is something you have to earn…😉
What equipment do I need to bring?
Not much actually, the instructor will equip you before departure. This is also why when you book, he will ask you a whole bunch of very indiscreet questions, like your height, weight and shoe size: don't be offended, it's just to prepare a wetsuit that fits you! He will also lend you a helmet, a harness, socks, and often shoes. If he asks you to bring your own sneakers, choose ones that hold your ankle well and aren't too afraid of the water. Also take something to securely fasten your goggles, something to tie your hair back, and bring a swimsuit so you don't end up naked under your wetsuit. And then, we advise you to bring a solid, compact and protected snack so it doesn't explode in your bag. Canyoning makes you hungry!
How far in advance do I need to book?
As soon as possible, of course! In the middle of summer, you won't be the only one wanting to make a short trip. But group sizes and the number of trips are limited for safety reasons and also to avoid disturbing the crayfish too much. But don't panic if you run out of availability: Come see us at the tourist office, we'll try to find you a good last-minute deal!
A natural playground... to be respected
🌿 Between secret gorges, crystal clear waters, discreet fauna et slippery foams like salted butter, canyoning is also a dive into a fragile environment.
You access places away from the crowdWhere the silence of nature is only disturbed by the lapping of the water and the laughter of a group pushing itself to the limit.
This privilege requires a absolute respect for nature : we do not turn over the stones, we avoid trampling the bottom of the water, and above all, we follow the instructor's instructions to the letterNo freestyling in giant cauldrons, OK?
Under the stones, life
Want to understand what lies beneath the swirls and rocks? Spot the plants clinging to the cliffs and know all the trout by name? Perfect: the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Natural Park has prepared information sheets to consult before setting off. A great way to explore the nature of the canyons with your eyes wide open (and your mind too)!
Now that you know everything there is to know about canyoning, all that's left is to book your trip! And if you're still hesitating… think about that unique feeling: jumping into a pool of clear water, surrounded by ancient rocks, with only the echo of your joy as a witness.
