Ardèche wines: 2000 years of history, and still a good reason to taste them
Terraced vineyards, abundant sunshine, grape varieties with lilting names, and patiently passed down expertise... Ardèche has cultivated the art of winemaking since ancient times. Even today, thousands of hectares tell this story in bottles.
Olivier de Serres: father of agronomy and Ardèche winemaker
Before becoming a statue in Villeneuve-de-Berg, Olivier de Serres was above all a pioneer. In the 16th century, this gentleman from the Ardèche region revolutionized agricultural practices with his famous work, Théâtre d'agriculture (Theater of Agriculture ). And guess what? He dedicated an entire chapter to the vine! Convinced that wine is an integral part of the art of living, he championed sustainable viticulture, respectful of the soil and the climate. A visionary, whose advice still resonates in the cellars of the Ardèche today.
Vines have been growing here for over 2000 years. The terms "Ardèche" and "Coteaux de l'Ardèche" are now recognized as Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) or Protected Designations of Origin (PDO ). They can be found in more than 300 communes, mainly south of Aubenas, with 7500 hectares of vines clinging to the slopes or planted in rows across the plains. What makes the difference? The diversity of the soils, an ideal climate, and the meticulous care of winemakers who know each row of vines intimately.
Three colors, a thousand shades
The reds of Ardèche offer a beautiful palette: Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Gamay, Pinot… with a special mention for Chatus, an old grape variety typically from Ardèche, with a strong character.
Chatus, a 100% Ardèche grape variety
Rustic, robust, and long forgotten, Chatus was on the verge of extinction... until a few stubborn winemakers decided to restore it to its rightful place. This ancient grape variety, cultivated on terraces in the acidic soils of the Ardèche Cévennes, produces an intense, tannic red wine, perfect for aging. Temperamental? Yes, a little. But what a pleasure after a few years in the cellar! If you like wines with a punch, Chatus could well become your new favorite.
The whites, on the other hand, are all about finesse. Chardonnay develops elegant floral notes, and Viognier, grown in southern Ardèche, produces aromatic and generous wines, perfect for surprising aperitifs.
And the rosé? Forget your prejudices. Here, it's dry, balanced, sometimes fruitier, but always well-made. A truly pleasant surprise, often.
The little secret of the autumn harvest
Less well-known than their Alsatian cousins, the late harvests of Ardèche are nevertheless worth the detour. Letting the grapes ripen longer produces sweet, fruity whites best served chilled. These lesser-known wines, often of high quality, are worth tasting at least once in your lifetime.
Meet a winemaker
Among the wonderful encounters to be had in the Ardèche vineyards, that of Marie and Louis de Moerloose is worth a stop in Vinezac. Together, they continue the adventure of Mas de Bagnols, a 6-hectare family estate nestled between red limestone and Cévennes sandstone. Since 2017, they have been carefully cultivating Syrah, Grenache, Marsanne, and Chatus, in the process of converting to organic farming.
Their modern winery, their oak barrel aging choices, their attention to living soils... all demonstrate a deep commitment, combining precision, passion, and respect for the living. Marie and Louis are committed to sharing their craft, their vintages, and the uniqueness of their terroir with generosity and simplicity.
Immersion at Neovinum
In Ruoms, a little further south, Neovinum offers a fun and immersive experience centered around Ardèche wines. The 45-minute show, led by the heroine "WineWoman," plunges you into the world of Ardèche winemakers, with vineyard flights, sensory activities, and a biodiversity garden.
Wine tasting workshops also offer an introduction to oenology in small groups, featuring three wines. And for children? There's an activity booklet, mini fruit juice tastings, and the chance to create personalized labels. A moment to share as a family, certified with the "Qualité Tourisme" label.
