Balmes de Montbrun

Around thirty caves, some of which have two floors, have been dug at different levels of the cliffs.
Access to this unusual place is free.
An explanatory panel (in French and English) is present at the entrance to the site near the small parking lot.
Traces of the development of these caves are still visible: anchors of beams and stairs, niches, skylights, gutters, grooves, benches.
A path still occasionally with paving served this town founded around 1210.
It has a chapel (the Sainte-Catherine chapel, still maintained) located to the north of the castle and also partly dug into the rock.
This medieval village had around fifty dwellings dug into the cliff of the crater of this erupted volcano, half of the dwellings are still visible and explorable!
The last inhabitants lived in the town around 1880, a hermit and a poor family, in a balme to the south-east.
The site has been inhabited for millennia, an oppidum existed opposite, at Cheylard, in the XNUMXth century.
