Château de Boulogne

The ruins of the Château de Boulogne were classified as historic monuments on 17 July 1915, following the criteria of the new law promulgated in 1913, which no longer required national interest, but public interest "from the point of view of history and art".

The seigneury of Boulogne Castle is believed to have been part of the possessions of the House of Poitiers as early as the 12th century. The buildings erected on the main building and the chapel, as well as the upper part of the keep, probably date from the 13th and 14th centuries. Large stables with outbuildings, known as the "Renaissance pavilion," and a gatehouse with two watchtowers were added to the medieval castle in the second half of the 14th century. Spared by the Wars of Religion and the French Revolution, the castle was dismantled at the beginning of the 19th century by an inhabitant of a neighboring village.

In 1979, a section of the wall collapsed, blocking the communal road and partially crushing a property located below. The situation of the ruins was alarming enough to warrant serious consolidation of the whole. In the early 1980s, the new owners bought the castle and called on the public authorities to halt the deterioration.

In 1983, heavy rains caused another collapse, making the site too dangerous and leading to its closure to the public. A major restoration program was undertaken, including the consolidation of the towers, the rebuilding of the main building wall and the western perimeter wall. Finally, the conversion of the "Renaissance Pavilion" into a secondary residence was completed in the 1990s. The site undergoes annual maintenance of its stonework.
