A visit to MuséAl, the museum and archaeological site of Alba-la-Romaine, is a true journey back in time to the Gallo-Roman era and the discovery of the capital of the Helvian people.
Alba Helviorum, a whole civilization to discover! A pleasant stroll around the ruins transports you to the heart of an ancient city with its administrative center, theater, temples, and shops. In the 2nd century BC, the southern half of Ardèche was occupied by a Gallic people, the Helviorum. This territory, like the southeastern part of Gaul, then came under Roman control.
Cabur, a Helvian prince, received Roman citizenship around 85 BC. The remains of the monumental fortress of Jastres, located 15 minutes from Alba-la-Romaine, testify (perhaps) to his power and loyalty to Rome. Around 10 BC, this fortress was abandoned and the city of Alba Helviorum took off with “Roman-style” urban development.
By its eminently strategic position, at the edge of the communication routes linking the Rhône Valley to the Cévennes and to the south of Gaul, Alba Helviorum reaches the rank of capital of the territory of the Helvians.
The archaeological site of Alba bears witness today to this veritable commercial and wealthy town, forgotten for more than 1 years and then rediscovered under the vines. This journey continues around the Museum's Collection, objects that bear witness to past life and splendor... What if these objects spoke to us about our life today and the origins of our culture? Do they still have the power to surprise or seduce us?
Each year, a temporary exhibition sheds light on an aspect of archaeological research in Alba to discover behind the scenes of the work of archaeologists. There are many bridges between yesterday and today!
