Almost everywhere, the end of summer has a slightly depressing feel to it, between going back to work, the gray weather, and putting away the barbecue... But in Ardèche, autumn is not at all sad, quite the opposite. Here, autumn is not just a season; it's an experience, a moment to be lived to the fullest.
– Weather-wise, it's often a mild extension of summer, with cool nights as a bonus for a good night's sleep. And when a Cévennes episode rears its ugly head, it's a guaranteed spectacle.
– In terms of atmosphere, it’s a delicious mix of restored calm and delicious festivities around our beloved fruit (what am I saying, venerated!): the chestnut.
– As for the landscapes, it’s simply magical, with color palettes that would make an impressionist painting look like a black and white photocopy.

Calm restored
After the hustle and bustle of summer, autumn brings a beautiful serenity. Fewer people on the roads, on the trails, in the villages... We find a gentler pace. The landscapes change tone, the days slowly get shorter, the atmosphere becomes more intimate. It's a perfect season to reconnect with nature, to take time, to savor the tranquility of a still-preserved territory.
The most beautiful sunrises
At this time of year, the mornings often offer a unique spectacle: light mists floating over the valleys, enveloping the hills in a silent veil. And when the sun gently pierces this blanket, the scene becomes almost surreal. From the heights, the views are breathtaking. Whether hiking or simply from a hilltop village, these suspended moments leave a lasting impression. It's a soft, golden, almost magical light.
Chestnut season… and chestnuts!
It's chestnut season , the emblematic fruit of the Ardèche. Picked, roasted, transformed into "crème de marron" (which is, in fact, chestnut jam), it is everywhere.
And to celebrate it: the chestnut festivals , these convivial autumn celebrations where people taste local delicacies, dance, and discover traditional skills. Each village has its own version, but the spirit remains the same: warm, delicious, and lively. Autumn becomes a season of sharing, flavor, and tradition.
In Ardèche, the chestnut is not a fruit, it is a culture, a rite, a history, a link between generations, an infinite variety... almost a religion!
Spectacular rivers and waterfalls
We're not going to lie to you: even though autumn days are often wonderfully sunny, it's also the season for the famous Cévennes episodes: these weather events typical of the massifs of southern France, which sometimes cause significant flooding. Very large quantities of water fall in just a few hours, which has the effect of impressively swelling rivers and waterfalls.
A few days later, the spectacle is everywhere. Waterfalls that had dried up during the summer are coming back to life, the rivers are more lively than ever.
A film festival not to be missed
Every autumn, the Rencontres des Cinémas d'Europe (European Film Festival ) makes the heart of Aubenas (and beyond) beat to the rhythm of European cinema! For eight days, you can travel through films, meet directors and actors, and above all, share truly moving moments in the theater or over a drink. A festival as welcoming as it is renowned, both high-quality and unpretentious, just like the Ardèche region itself.
