Aubenas Castle

A witness to centuries past and a true guardian of local memory, the castle was completely renovated between 2016 and 2024. Today, it is a center for contemporary art and heritage. From ancient stonework to exuberant art installations, this journey through time is sure to move you!

Breathtaking views, between mountains and scrubland

Aubenas is a gateway between two worlds: the Ardèche mountains to the north and west, carpeted with chestnut groves and shrouded in morning mist, and the southern Ardèche to the south and east, with its limestone cliffs and fragrant garrigue. Take the time to admire these landscapes from the viewpoint in Place de l'Airette or while strolling through the narrow streets of the old town: every viewpoint is an invitation to escape . Here, unspoiled nature becomes a living painting, an ideal setting for moments of contemplation and serenity (and legendary selfies 😉).

Arts and crafts at the heart
City

In the narrow streets of Aubenas, every shop holds a treasure. Cabinetmakers, potters, textile designers, and sculptors: local artisans breathe their soul into unique works. The Aubenas Arts and Crafts Center is a must-see for lovers of fine craftsmanship. Step inside a shop, discover incredible artisans, and leave with an authentic piece, a true fragment of the Ardèche region. This living heritage testifies to the inhabitants' attachment to their culture and traditions, while constantly reinventing itself with modern inspirations.

Fountains and sunny alleys: the charm of Aubenas

Strolling through Aubenas is like stepping into a film set, imbued with a southern charm. Its cobbled streets, shaded squares , and murmuring fountains invite you to slow down and savor the moment. The Ardèche sun caresses the ancient facades, and the scents of warm stone and fresh bread perfume the air. At every turn, a detail catches the eye: an ornate doorway, a centuries-old staircase, or a breathtaking view of the valley. Here, you can happily lose yourself in a setting where time seems to stand still.

It's hard to say which is the best viewpoint in Aubenas. But the view from the Pont d'Ucel district is definitely worth the detour.

Aubenas, a gourmet town

In Aubenas, the food is good, even exceptional! The small restaurants in the town center compete to offer the best local products : melting cheeses, artisanal ice cream, fragrant nougat, and Ardèche wines with their distinctive, melodious character. And on Saturday mornings, the market is a spectacle in itself: the stalls overflow with colors, aromas, and smiles. Stroll around, taste, and chat with the passionate producers . Whether you're a casual eater or a gourmet, Aubenas will satisfy all your cravings.

A vibrant cultural life
all year

In Aubenas, the cultural calendar never stops. Concerts, theater, art-house cinema, and festivals punctuate the seasons. In autumn, the Film Festival warms hearts; in spring, comic books take center stage, making young and old laugh and dream. The media library and its activities complement this rich and varied offering, making Aubenas a place where life is vibrant all year round.

Aubenas, through the seasons

Each season brings its share of wonders to Aubenas.

  • Au spring, nature blossoms in a festival of sensations and the café terraces fill up.
  • The summer invites you to long festive evenings under the starry sky, with its night markets and small concerts.
  • En autumn, while the paths are filled with sleeping red leaves, the scent of roasted chestnuts begins to tickle the nostrils.
  • En winter, the mountains in the distance are covered in a peaceful blanket, and the shops light up in Christmas colors... No matter when you come, Aubenas always offers you an authentic and unforgettable experience.

Any questions?

Even though it's very difficult to answer this question definitively, we're tempted to say… Yes! With around 200 days of sunshine a year, Aubenas is pretty well-placed in the mild climate rankings . If you come in the spring, there might be a few showers, but also plenty of sunshine. If you come in the summer, bring sun protection, as temperatures can get quite high! If you come in the autumn, you'll undoubtedly be surprised by the mildness of the air. If you come in the winter, you might be surprised by the crisp wind, and to be sure of seeing snow, you'll have to head a little further north, into the mountains. Whatever the weather , check it regularly!

The banks of the Ardèche below aren't really set up for that. If you want to enjoy a delightful moment of wild splashing, we recommend driving a few kilometers to one of the developed beaches nearby.

Of course! We suggest two very pleasant and well-marked semi-urban loops for discovering the local heritage : Aubenas Along the Water and Around the Montlaur City. If you prefer more rugged hikes, you'll find plenty to enjoy in the surrounding area.

The city center has several parking lots , some of which are free. Our advice: on market days, especially in the summer, it's best to arrive early in the morning! And if parking isn't your thing, the local bus network offers shuttles from Monday to Saturday (and even on Sundays in July and August) between the bus station and the city center.

Absolutely not ! One of our tour guide partners explained why: locally, when a town's name ends in "-as," the "s" is pronounced if it's a village, but it's silent if it's a city. If you meet someone from Aubenas, mention the village of Aubenas, and you'll see from their bewildered expression that, on our Ardèche scale, this proud town is undeniably a true megalopolis 😁.
